One can only wonder where Westwood can take us from here.

The real-time strategy genre is a victim of its own success, suffering the same unfortunate fate as first-person action games in the post-Doom era. Publishers know the category is hot, and have responded by firing salvo after salvo of copycat designs and lookalike games at unwary players. There will be no less than a dozen new entries into the real-time strategy market this holiday season alone - and trying to pick the right one is like playing Russian Roulette with five chambers loaded.

That is, unless you pick Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Developed by Westwood Studios - whose seminal Dune II created the real-time strategy category, and whose Command & Conquer (along with Blizzard's Warcraft II) represents the highest achievement in the genre to date - Red Alert has the pedigree of a champion and a premise to match: Albert Einstein applies his theories of relativity to time travel, hurtling back in time to assassinate Hitler before he ever comes to power. The plan works, and with Hitler out of the picture, Nazi Germany never materializes. But unfortunately, the Red Menace does, with Russia's Stalin turning a burgeoning war machine towards the West, raining destruction and terror on those unfortunate enough to find themselves standing in his way.

And that's where you come in, on either the Allied or Soviet side. Allied players will rely on stealth and surprise, while those aligning themselves with the Soviets will place their bets on brutal force. Overall, we like the Soviet side better, especially since players are given the freedom to play the bad guy to the hilt. In the first Russian mission, for example, the player is informed of a partisan uprising in a small village, and gets marching orders that only a sadist could love. "They are enemies of the people," intones a cold-hearted Stalin, "Destroy the town, and kill everyone in it." The meeting room slowly dissolves to the now familiar overhead map, covered with tanks, soldiers, and assorted other perpetrators of mass mayhem, all eagerly awaiting the player's command to exterminate the enemy.

The design and functionality of these units is arguably the best ever in a real-time strategy game, and certainly the best since the aforementioned Dune II. The variety of forces and structures is unmatched, providing players with an almost unlimited palette with which to paint their strategic strokes (the only flawed unit is the Soviet sub, which inexplicably will not attack ships that come within its weapons' range). Better yet, the units of the two opposing sides aren't mere copies of each other, but instead maintain a sort of karmic balance. For example, the Allies' aptly-named Destroyer, which can relentlessly attack land, sea, and air units from long distances, is countered by the Soviet MiG, which packs a powerful punch and is absolutely devastating in numbers. The Allies' Medic, who can literally restore life to the barely breathing foot units, is eerily matched by the Soviet's brutal Attack Dogs, calamitous canines that can wipe out a half dozen troops in matter of seconds. This not-the-same-but-somehow-related unit design permeates the game, and gives Red Alert a level of depth and complexity that will keep players occupied for months on end.

Another huge plus is the level design found in Red Alert's one-player game. The forty or so levels consistently strike the right balance between long, drawn out wars of building and attrition, and short intense bursts of behind-the-lines conflict, convoy protection, and hostage rescue. The levels are also fair: You won't need to send troops out to explore the undiscovered regions, then restart the scenario with this illegitimately acquired knowledge. You also won't be forced into using any particular strategy to "solve" the "puzzle" a mission presents - the number and variety of units means there are literally dozens of ways to take any given piece of territory. And last but not least, Red Alert doesn't require overwhelming force to win. With the right mix of troops, the right plan, and the right timing, you can handily win battles that would otherwise appear to be heavily tilted against you. All of these factors encourage exploration and risk-taking relatively early in each scenario - bringing a sense of unpredictability and adventure to Red Alert that is all too often missing from games of this type.

The action is punctuated by cutscenes which dramatically illustrate a key moment from or result of the previous mission - an Allied bridge being blown to smithereens or a Russian sign being crushed by an Allied truck. As you might expect from Westwood, the animated cutscenes are simply awesome. The mission briefings with live actors are less impressive - the writing and story are fine, but the acting is awkward at times (Stalin's romantic interlude with a female aide is particularly difficult to watch).

The cutscenes are beautifully complemented by Red Alert's SVGA gameplay graphics. Whether the smoke trailing behind an air-to-air missile, the fiery glow of an explosive chain reaction, or swarms of HIND helicopters mercilessly gunning down a land-based target, the visuals are consistently smooth and convincing. The higher resolution also means that a large portion of the battlefield is visible onscreen, allowing quick and easy monitoring and control of units over relatively vast stretches of territory (Luddites who disagree with the above are welcome to play the DOS VGA version of the game, included at no charge for nostalgia's sake and for the benefit of those with less advanced systems). And Red Alert is as much fun to listen to as it is to watch, with crisp, realistic sound effects and more of the Westwood's trademark techno-cum-military musical accompaniments.

As you'd expect, Red Alert includes a full array of multiplayer options, and compatibility with just about every type of network protocol. We've only scratched the surface of the multiplayer game, but we can report that it is so good that Quake's reign as king of the hill at the GameSpot office may be nearing an end. There's also a skirmish option that can be used for practicing on multiplayer maps even if no one else is around - and the computer AI is good enough to offer legitimate preparation for a human opponent.

It's a compelling package - one of the best you'll find in the world of PC games. Red Alert belongs in the same category as Civilization II and Quake, games that followed legendary predecessors and immediately eclipsed them. One can only wonder where Westwood can take us from here.

Rename a game: Select Select a game tab and execute right click on a game. Choose Rename game enter the new name.
Save or change the game tumbnail: You can change the game tumbnail (visible on Select a game tab): when playing (tab Play the game must be activated) press on F2. This automatically save a game tumbnail in database.
Add to favorites: Select Select a game tab and execute right click on a game. Click on Favorites -> Add to favorites and enter a descriptive name.

The expansion to StarCraft may neither claim nor truly be a sequel but it does more to add to some already addicting gameplay than most sequels to other games can’t even pull off. Also, the addition of new units changes the whole game without even so much as barely touching the existing engine.

If all you want to do is ram the throttle forward, punch holes in the sky, and gun down the bad guys without having to think too much, the excellent "Jane's WWII Fighters" is the sim for you. If, however, you recognize that modern-day fighter pilots are the ultimate high performance human beings who combine tactical combat knowledge with the ability to manage incredibly complex airplanes and systems under intense physical and mental stress, and if taking on just the idea of that kind of challenge appeals to you, buy Falcon
4.0 right now before it disappears completely. The sad truth is that this sim is simply too good for 90% of its potential market - the average "casual" PC flyer will open the (very well written) 500+ page manual and feel like a Maverick has hit him or her in the noggin. USAF fighter pilots are some of the smartest, brightest, most over-achieving people on the planet, and to master Falcon 4.0, that's pretty much who you will need to be as well. If you've got what it takes, however, the rewards are here - and I do mean all the rewards are here. Everything. This is as good as PC-based jet fighter sims are ever going to be.
Note: This review applies to Falcon 4.0 flown in Campaign mode with avionics, flight model and systems all set to "realistic." If you just want to turn, burn and heave missiles at things, you can turn all that stuff down to "easy," enter the Dogfight arena, and have a blast!

Falcon 4.0's development was dropped by Microprose shortly after it's release in 1998, probably because of it's complexity and the large number of bugs that were showing up in the game. They probably thought it wasn't worth the cost of making all the fixes. But, because it was such an excelent flight simulator (probably more accurately called an F-16 flight trainer), in spite of its problems, it had drawn a large crowd of enthusiasts, very similar to the Trekkies that popped up after the original Star Trek TV series was canceled. They took up the gauntlet and proceded to produce their own patches and updates. Because it was an enthusiast based effort it proved to be very anarchic, a muddled up pile of patches that was difficult to sort out as to which worked with what. The enthusiast effort finally seems to have matured into only a few branches now. The patching system enclosed in this offering seems to give an excelent running sim. I suggest you apply the 1.08 patch and then give it a spin. It actually runs out fairly good after that patch. Then apply the SP4.2 patch installer and give it another try. You'll be amazed at how good a job the enthusiasts have done. I suggest you download the manuals first and take a look at them, then decide if you want to give it a try.

The premise for the Metal Slug games has always been very simple. There is some evil force that is invading the Earth that you must stop. Hey, the story isn't going to win any awards, so it doesn't need to be the game's forte. You start the game by picking one of four soldiers (two in two player mode) who have identical stats. Each of the players start with a machine gun, high damage bombs and an instant kill knife weapon for close range combat. You move your character in the standard left to right side scrolling style to blast what seems to be like an endless swarm of enemies. You'd better shoot fast because one tiny touch of an enemy or projectile will lead into your death.

The World Cyber Games are being held in San Francisco this week, and along with the festivities that accompany it, several game publishers and hardware manufacturers have taken the opportunity to hock their wares. Vivendi Universal was definitely the publisher with the biggest lineup at the show, and we were there for much of the day checking out some of its upcoming PC games.

The headlining act, if you will, was Empire Earth II. Attendees were treated to a unique demo of sorts: a short tournament in which WCG finalists were all able to take on Mad Doc software's own Dr. Ian Lane Davis in a four-player, free-for-all fest. Needless to say, yours truly made it to the final round and had the pleasure of being trounced by the good doctor. Rest assured, however, that I did not make it easy for him.

Meet people from fascinating cultures... and destroy them.

A bit of background: Empire Earth II, like its predecessor, allows players to take guide a civilization from the Stone Age all the way to the distant future -- all in the context of an RTS, of course. Early EE II scenarios will put slingers, primitive infantrymen, and the like at your disposal, while the later ones will have you commanding squads of giant robots and all sorts of futuristic artillery. There are 15 civilizations in all, which include the Romans, Turks, Koreans, Greeks, Egyptians, Germans, Aztecs, and Mayan, among others. Each of these groups will have certain areas in which they excel, as well as units unique to them.

In any case, hoping to see some cool Stargate-style units, I choose the Egyptians during my preliminary round. I was a little dismayed to learn that the scenario for my bracket of the tournament was limited to a relative epoch; however, I soldiered on. I'm proud to say that my opponents gave me very little competition. One of them left the match almost immediately, and the other quickly fell after he botched a couple of ill-timed preemptive attacks on my city. Soon enough, my army -- which mostly consisted of elephant-mounted cavalry and mounted slingers -- laid waste to his city. I quickly established a city center and fortress in the region that was previously his and took it as my own. From there, it was only a matter of time before I tracked down the few stragglers he had remaining and secured the victory. Then it was on the second round.

It's clear that Stormregion didn't need to fix much in Phase One, and so Phase Two plays it safe by offering more of the same.
The Good: Excellent real-time strategy mechanics; destructible environments; multiple tactical solutions for most problems; solid multiplayer, though it requires more options.
The Bad: Graphics engine starting to show its age; desert environments are bland and uninteresting.

Dark and Light E3 2005 Impressions
We take a look at this new MMORPG at E3 2005.

We had a chance to sit down with Farlan Entertainment, publishers of Dark and Light, a brand-new MMORPG, for a demonstration of the title. We came away with these impressions.

First off, the theme behind Dark and Light seems to be one of scale: the cluster technology used by Dark and Light supposedly allows for up to 500,000 players playing concurrently on the same server; the gameworld is 40,000 square kilometers in size; and the view distance lets you see up to 30 miles away. We only managed to see a small portion of this during our demo, obviously because of its huge size, although it does appear that some of these zones are already well-populated, presumably with beta testers. There are 12 realms in total, with two of those being starter areas, and the other 10 being PvP oriented.

One aspect of Dark and Light that will no doubt appeal to pure role-players is the variety of play experiences that it promises to offer. You can head out into the wilderness and start chopping up monsters, of course, but we're told that the developers are being careful to focus on enabling players to proceed with alternate play styles. We're told, for example, that you will indeed be able to make crafting a true profession, and you can stay back in town whittling (or whatever you choose to do) for the entirety of your playing time without ever killing a monster. There's also going to be social experience, which rewards you for finding new lovers; explorer experience, which rewards you for being the first to discover a new part of the gameworld; and political abilities, which will let you become the mayor of a town, the lord of a realm, or even the king or queen of a kingdom. Before you get the idea of a tyranny in your head, though, be warned that a king that sets taxes too high and rules with an iron fist can indeed be overthrown.

Another interesting aspect of the gameworld is that the developers claim to have accurately modeled shifting seasons and even monster migratory patterns. We're told that if monsters become a favorite target for players, they'll eventually up and move in an attempt to increase their survivability (this will also happen if their food supplies run out). There's also going to be a weather system with snow, wind, and rain. In the winter, bodies of water may freeze, giving players access to parts of the world that would otherwise be unreachable.

Since the game pits Light players against Dark players (as a result of the game's split pantheon), it'll be worth the while of players to get chummy with their chosen god for a number of reasons. Astrology and worship can help make you a more successful crafter, for one, and your faith can also become handy on the battlefield. We're told that you'll be allowed to pray at any time you wish and that, depending on your relationship with your deity, will be able to affect some pretty drastic changes in battle. We were given the example of a pious level 10 player being able to defeat a level 60 player with a lucky pray, or even being able to just kill him outright if everything goes perfectly. If you think you're about to be ganked, though, you can also attempt to fake a prayer and just display the praying animation in an attempt to scare off your attackers.

Some other interesting features include the ability to tame flying pets, such as dragons. If you have a high beast training skill, you'll be able to tame animals and use them as companions. You will have to share experience with them, but in an interesting twist, you can select precisely how much experience you want to give them, with anything from 0 to 50 percent being valid options. Another neat feature is your ability to hire out your player to politicians who are eager to garrison their villages or towns to guard against enemy attacks. Your pay depends on your performance, obviously, so if you happen to be offline while an attack is occurring, you can allow the server to spawn an AI version of your character and use that in your stead.

Dark and Light is looking like it may be an interesting choice for MMO users interested in pursuing a more role-playing-oriented online experience.

Many puzzle games offer an endless succession of static screens, but not Crystalix. This new release features a scrolling world bursting with visual surprises. Besides providing a beautiful world in which to play, Crystalix also offers a unique blend of logic and arcade action. In Crystalix, you're a wizard who sets out to cleanse his land of the remains of a shattered comet. From a moonlit forest to a winter wonderland, Crystalix proves puzzle games can be as enjoyable to look at as they are fun to play.

Breed makes a horrible first impression and then keeps making more bad impressions as you play.

Breed makes a horrible first impression. This single-player sci-fi shooter takes so outrageously long to load that it should ship with an alarm clock to wake you up when it's finally ready. Breed then makes many more bad impressions once you actually get to play it. You quickly see that it takes a lot of its ideas from the hit game Halo (and in turn from films like Starship Troopers and Aliens), and that it suffers from flimsy writing, atrocious voice acting, generic enemies and settings, frame rate hits, poor mission design, lagging multiplayer, and severe bugs. All isn't totally lost, though. For all that Breed does wrong, it at least lets you control some neat vehicles in expansive environments. Still, even in its good moments--which are uncommon--Breed is a poor game. During its many bad moments, you'll want to avoid it altogether.

Breed sends you to the twenty-seventh century, where a horde of alien creatures known as the Breed have lured most of Earth's military away to a distant colony to launch a sneak attack on Earth. You play as the few remaining GRUNT (Genetically Revived Universal Tactical Sentient) soldiers, basically clones, who return home to find Earth overrun with little purple and red aliens armed with glowing guns. You'd think a tale of a last-ditch effort to liberate Earth from alien hordes would be gripping. Not in Breed; it totally lacks emotional resonance. The scenarios, settings, and alien invaders feel generic, with no discernible character, let alone real style or imagination. The cutscenes are plodding and clumsy, and the writing leaves even more to be desired: "A tear falls into my handkerchief," your silly and gabby leader solemnly intones. A character duly notes that her "head hurts" when she's blown up by artillery fire, and a soldier calls the Breed "dumb heads" as an insult. Some lines are oddly phrased: "permission given" instead of "permission granted." There are localization problems also, like a few words spelled in German in the subtitles.

Assuming you don't uninstall the game in frustration, you'll progress through eighteen missions, sometimes alone, but often with a small squad of GRUNTs. You play from either a first- or third-person view and assume direct control of any GRUNT in your squad at will. As in Halo, you'll zip around outdoors in futuristic dune buggies and tanks and fly in nimble fighters. You take over enemy turrets to blast hordes of hapless Breed, who often move, fight, and even do little sideways acrobatic dodges just like the aliens in Halo. Occasionally you'll fight indoors, too, but those settings are sparse and boring.

There's little fun to be had fighting on foot in Breed, in part because your squad mates are monstrously inept. They're far more of a hindrance than a help, since they barely return fire yet always manage to end up right in the line of fire--that is, when they're not falling off cliffs. (Things get even worse in some of the airborne missions, where your wingmen literally do nothing to help out.) Since the artificial intelligence allies in Breed always seem to be in need of rescuing, most of your "tactics" revolve around keeping them out of harm's way instead of using them as combat assets. It seems utterly superfluous that you can order them to spread out, close in, assume different formations, and so on. You'll mostly be ordering them to halt behind what little cover you can find or telling them to hand you a medikit when you're in dire straits.

GRUNTs are divided into a few different classes that determine what two weapons they initially carry (the two-weapon limit again recalling Halo). The weapons in Breed are all standard shooter fare: slightly futuristic assault rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers, sniper rifles, and the like. Breed ignores one of the basic necessities of any shooter: The guns should look so cool and feel so powerful that the mere act of firing them is fun. Here, they're all pretty dull. As in Halo, you can pick up alien energy weapons, but these are also bland, not to mention inaccurate.

Breed takes a turn for the better with its vehicles. The ground vehicles, including tanks, buggies, jeeps, and APCs are easy to control (think Halo or Battlefield 1942) and boast physics that are just realistic enough without becoming cumbersome. Some of them bristle with multiple weapons, like the neatest GRUNT vehicle, the tank. You both steer it and aim the main turret, which lets you switch between a minigun, plasma cannon, guided missiles, and rockets. Meanwhile, other GRUNTs man smaller machine-gun turrets. It's overkill in the best sense. Cruising around and blasting towers and trees to dust can be fun while it lasts. (Fun never lasts long in Breed.) Air vehicles, like fighters and dropships, are a bear to control at first and can fall into irrecoverable stalls too easily, but once you get the hang of them you'll appreciate their high maneuverability.

Unfortunately, Breed's missions can be so numbingly repetitive, predictable, or downright confusing that it probably won't matter to you whether you're driving a snazzy vehicle or merely jogging about on foot. Superficially, the missions are well varied: You fight outdoors and in, on the ground and in the air (sometimes in the same mission). Sometimes there are timed segments to light a fire under you. Beneath that exterior diversity, you quickly see that the missions often follow the same basic patterns. Every time you turn a bend or crest a hill, out pops a horde of enemies, usually with a couple more firing nearby turrets or firing down from nearby hilltops. It's way too easy to guess exactly what will happen next.

Scripting problems, bugs, and confusing goals also mar missions. You're told a wingman is in trouble and that you need to help him, yet there are no enemies left that can hurt him. As you try to escort him to safety, he just mysteriously blows up for no reason, and there goes the mission.

On top of that, the aliens in Breed are about as smart as stones: Other than the occasional dodge, they mostly just charge you until they're all wiped out, or they stand around waiting to be sniped en masse. When they win, it's through sheer strength in numbers, and the game loves to overwhelm you with enemies. Airborne battles are similar in that they usually send one wave of fighters after another toward you with a clockwork precision.

Breed's presentation suffers from the same lack of imagination and polish that hurts the whole game. It's literally hard to remember what the aliens look like (other than their vague resemblance to Halo's enemies), and the same applies to the GRUNT armor, enemy bases, and most of the vehicles. The game's settings usually bear little resemblance to any real place on Earth, but rather feel like some generic fantasy planet. Technically, the graphics are reasonably impressive, rendering all kinds of flashy weapon fire and sprawling outdoor environments, but at the cost of stuttering frame rates--particularly during battles. Even with a high-end rig, you may have to crank the resolution or details down. The game is also annoying in that it requires you to re-specify your preferred refresh rate every time you play.

While the graphics have their good and bad points, the audio is often so bad you'll want to turn it off. Prepare yourself for audio stuttering and drop-outs, forgettable music, wimpy-sounding weapons and explosions, and horrid voice "acting" (by the game's developers instead of professional actors) replete with cheesy accents and mispronounced words ("stealth" comes out as "steelth").

Along with the poor single-player campaign, Breed includes unimaginative multiplayer: just deathmatch variants. It can still be mildly fun to fly above the battlefield and bomb unsuspecting soldiers into oblivion, though we found multiplayer barely playable most of the time, even with the latest patch installed. Various bugs, some ill-conceived maps, and frequent--and often severe--lag, warping, and hit detection issues mean you can snipe someone in the head five times without it registering. Vehicles and characters often seem to teleport around the map, move through each other, or sink into the ground, even when you play over a broadband connection. Really, the only thing Breed has going for it is its wide variety of vehicles. But in a game with so many serious problems, it's hard to enjoy them for long.

Strategy First has two expansion packs for Disciples II that provide new campaigns for the dark and light factions and let you turn up the graphics resolution.

Despite the critical acclaim it's received, the Disciples series hasn't exactly taken the best-seller lists by storm. The turn-based strategy series, which consists of 1999's Disciples: Sacred Lands and 2002's Disciples II: Dark Prophecy, has developed a cult following among those who have come to enjoy the series' easy-to-learn gameplay, its strategic depth, and the romantic fantasy setting of Nevendaar. And now, Strategy First is working on two stand-alone expansion packs for Disciples II. Guardians of the Light is currently nearing completion and is set for release early this summer, while Servants of the Dark is expected to arrive not long afterward, possibly before fall.

An undead dark elf is a key character in Servants of the Dark, the second of two upcoming Disciples II expansions.

Both expansion packs are slightly different from most commercial expansion packs, since they'll both have content from the original game, as well as new campaigns, characters, and units. Guardians of the Light, for instance, bundles the scenarios featuring the Empire and Mountain Clans from Disciples II with new high-level scenarios written to expand the saga of these good-aligned races. Not surprisingly, Servants of the Dark does the same thing for the evil Legion of the Damned and Undead Hordes, since most of the series' fans seem to prefer either the good or the evil races.

"The goal of the expansions was to try to appeal to a new, broader audience by allowing people to purchase a thematic pack based on the way in which they like to play these types of games (good or evil)," explained Ariel Gauthier, the expansion packs' producer. "We received a lot of feedback from the original Disciples II that indicated people were often playing only one race, and we decided we could offer a specialized version of the product at a discounted price. Of course, we want to reach as many new players as possible to build the Disciples fan base, get more people involved in multiplayer, and keep Nevendaar fresh in the minds of the public for future endeavors."

Gauthier and the rest of the development team also hope to accentuate rivalries between the good and evil player factions. However, followers of both good and evil should expect to play fairly similar scenarios. Even with the narrower focus, both Guardians of the Light and Servants of the Dark will continue the saga that began in Disciples. They will collectively form a single coherent plot, the main difference being varied perspectives on the overall story. While each campaign will be unique and will feature its own characters, mission objectives, and maps, the types of tasks you'll undertake will vary depending on which race you've chosen.

Guardians of the Light features the return of the Mountain Clans.

For example, when playing as the Undead Hordes, your objectives may simply consist of slaughtering innocents, followed by slaughtering more innocents. As you might expect, you won't have the same goals if you decide to play as the sanctimonious servants of the Empire. At the same time, the story won't be so convoluted that players will have to buy both expansion packs to figure out who's who. Strategy First certainly wants Disciples II fans to pick up both games, but it wants to encourage that with great gameplay, not plot contrivances.

"The overall plot was planned out before we decided to split the expansions, but it is told in such a way that you do not need to play one campaign to understand the others," said designer Ethan Petty. "Each campaign is a story in itself, but playing other races will enhance the story you have seen. Much like their predecessor, the campaigns in the expansion share a lot of characters and events, but no one campaign tells the full story."

LucasArts showed off a few levels from its upcoming 3D adventure game Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels at this year's E3. The original Full Throttle, released in 1995, remains one of the quintessential PC adventure games with its stylistic graphics and likable biker punk protagonist, Ben. The square-jawed hero was just as quick with his wit as he was with his fists, making for a memorable adventure experience. Ben is back now in full 3D, and LucasArts has plans to incorporate more action elements into his repertoire, making Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels a hybrid action-adventure game. This time around, Ben has to stop a nefarious plot to tear up and destroy the roads of the wasteland.

The first portion of Hell on Wheels we saw involved Ben in a bike race with a villain named Perkins. Perkins doesn't like to play fair, so we stooped to his level and tried to knock him off the road with kicks and punches. After successfully whacking him off his bike, we ended up at Perkins' gang's hideout, where he arrives later and isn't happy. Despite being totally outnumbered, Ben decides to agitate Perkins' boys, resulting in his bike getting stolen. In this portion of the game we got to see how the action and adventure elements play together.

Immediately after a few cutscenes that showed Ben picking the fight, the game switched into action mode, where we had to beat up some of the gang members. You can use combo attacks by pressing the attack button in rhythm--the better you fight, the higher your mojo meter goes. As the mojo meter rises, you grow steadily more powerful and have the ability to execute more powerful moves. The surrounding environment is pretty interactive too; it's possible to pick up objects like chairs and smash them over people's heads, as we saw in the demo. It will also be possible to slide foes down a bar and utilize the environment in other creative ways aside from picking up objects and bludgeoning people with them.

Eventually we ended up stuck at a door, and at this point the adventure elements of the game kicked in and we had to solve a puzzle. The man guarding the door wouldn't let Ben in, even after we tried to imitate Perkins' voice, because the doorman could see through the peephole. The only solution was to bring Perkins to the door. After a bit of exploring, we found Perkins jamming it up with his band, thinking that the other gang members had taken care of Ben. After beating up the band members and Perkins, we dragged the gang leader's body to the door, and finally, Ben was able to fool the doorman into letting him in.

The addition of action elements does make Hell on Wheels stray from its pure adventure game roots, as far as gameplay mechanics are concerned. LucasArts will have to take extra care that the humor and personality of the original game are retained in order not to alienate longtime fans. Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels is scheduled to be released in late 2003 for the PlayStation 2, the PC, and the Xbox. We'll have more details on the game as they become available.

In Full Throttle is a cartoon style game where the player of the game plays as Ben a leader of a motorcycle gang whom has been framed for a brutal murder. Ben must escape from the police, break his gang out of jail and reveal the true killer.
